Lagos
Lagos is one of the few Algarve holiday resorts to retain its identity as a real town and not just a tourist destination. It is a fishing port and market town first, and a holiday spot second.
Unfortunately, an earthquake and tidal wave destroyed much of the original town in the mid 18th century. Since then it has evolved into a vibrant centre with stylish shops, promenades and cobbled back streets. Lagos will impress you with its relaxed atmosphere and quiet charm making it stand out as one of the most appealing locations in the Algarve.
There are a fantastic range of boat trips from Lagos and this beautiful coastline has lots to see. Stroll down the marine walk and you will see all that there is to offer. There are fishing trips, dolphin cruises, diving, beach barbeques and grotto trips to name but a few.
The beaches around Lagos are truly beautiful. Dona Ana is the most popular family beach which can be reached after a 25 minute walk from the center of the town. The beach is surrounded by fascinating rock formations which set a truly beautiful scene. Visitors are also attracted to the Ponta da Piedade which is a headland to the south of Lagos, surrounded by fascinating rock formations, caves and wonderfully transparent waters.
Eating out in Lagos restaurants is a big part of what Lagos is about. There is a fantastic array of dishes to try and one not to be missed, as with any fishing village, is the fresh fish.
Lagos was the capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756 and there remain several ancient buildings to testify to its historic glory. The city’s walls are the largest and best-preserved in the Algarve and well worth a visit. The walls were partly destroyed along with all the other buildings with the great earthquake of 1755. Among those which were rebuilt and have since undergone renovation are the Church of Santa Maria with 16th-century traces, the 17th-century regimental storehouse next to it, and the impressive Golden Church of Santo António which forms part of Lagos’ museum.
Lagos has beautiful beaches, a great climate, a warm and inviting sea, a scenic coastline and a real history. It is a really pretty town which is home to many sophisticated bars and restaurants and provides visitors with a great selection of cultural and night-life entertainment venues.
